During the Plett ARTS Festival, Kwendalo hosts an exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist, David Kantey in the Harmony Centre on the estate. Kwendalo's beautiful gardens and natural surrounds make it an ideal venue within which to view David's works, which have a strong connection to nature. The artist will be in residence during exhibition hours and it will run for the duration of the festival.

Kwendalo's ethos of Nature.Nurture.Nourish is mirrored in this exhibition and visitors are encouraged to enjoy nature and nature-inspired art, nurturing the spirit and nourishing the mind.

David will be conducting two art workshops and two concerts, titled WhaleTides, at Kwendalo during the course of the festival. Details of these appear on the full programme. While visiting the exhibition, make use of Kwendalo's facilities and visit the Green Cafe for juice, smoothies or a light lunch.

A percentage of the sale of artworks will go to Kwendalo's The Harmony Project, a philosophy and learning curriculum that aims to transform education to ensure it is fit for purpose in preparing young people for life in the 21st Century, working with teachers and educators to reframe teaching and learning around natural laws and life principles which illuminate the world as an interconnected whole.

ART: He began his art career as an apprentice in the growing Batik business of the successful Simran Batik community of artists, and over the next 15 years created beautiful popular Whale and Dolphin imagery. In 2002, he made the successful transition to oil and acrylic paints, and has been working in these mediums for the last 20 years at his studio/gallery in The Tides estate, right on the water's edge of the Keurbooms Lagoon, Plettenberg Bay. His earlier works were very accurate realism: Landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, and animal portraits on commission.

David has a constant demand for his works - locally, nationally, and internationally - and a large part of these sales are commissioned works. His works are modern, colourful, semi-abstract sea and landscapes, with a very strong emphasis on light, textures and fine detail. He is constantly striving creatively to grow his arts expression and the phases of this growth always challenge his skills and vision over the years, earning him a solid reputation as a premier fine artist.

MUSIC: David studied for his B. Music at UCT Music College from 1972-75 and still has a successful career as a composer of orchestral works. Since 1972 has been composing and performing his original works across South Africa and in particular the WhaleTides Concert Experience which highlights his unique interaction - a life changing experience - with a female Southern Right whale who guided the terms of the encounter. A wide audience has since been fascinated and affected by this story and the music.
