Mel is a marine scientist, conservationist and ocean photographer whose life and work have always revolved around the sea. With a lifelong love for the ocean, she has spent much of her time in, on or alongside it surfing, snorkelling, exploring the coastline and, increasingly, capturing the moments that make it so special through her camera. Mel is currently finalising her Masters degree, researching the sharks and rays of Plettenberg Bay. Her work in marine science and conservation has given her a unique perspective on the ocean: not only as something beautiful to photograph, but as a complex, wild and constantly changing environment filled with life. Based in Plettenberg Bay, much of her photography is inspired by the place she calls home its waves, wildlife, coastline and the small moments of magic that are so easily missed. Through Mel Makes Waves, she brings together her love of photography, the ocean and Plett, sharing the way she sees a world that has fascinated her for as long as she can remember.
