Lanice is a local artist, who has been painting for the past 16 years. She paints in oil and pastel. It is a hobbie but her passion.
I was interested in art, drawing and painting from my early years at primary school in Rhodesia, where I won a national competition for a poster designed to prevent people from starting veld fires in conservation areas. The poster featured a Vervet monkey, and I still have the artwork today.
I did not pursue art during my high school years; I probably should have chosen art as a matric subject instead of the more sensible subjects. Most of which are not that helpful after school.
I took up art again approximately 20 years ago when my husband was posted to Pietersburg to manage his firm's Limpopo Province office. This gave me access to many scenic vistas, including the Kruger National Park and the Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana, and Kalahari which re-inspired me. I also then had access to a very gifted tutor, Elsabe Moolman, and her very successful art school.
My husband and I have now lived in Plett for many years, and I have been coming here on holidays since 1960, and of course there are many inspiring scenes in this area, so I continued to paint. I have explored the mediums of water colours, pastels and oils. I seem to have settled on oils as my favourite medium. Most of my paintings are hanging in my house in Plett and in my daughters houses. The subject matter varies from originals of bushveld and sea scapes, to still lives of gardens and flowers, and the occasional portrait. As part of my learning and development I have also painted copies of works done by more established commercial or famous artists.
